‘The Wolverine’ Earns $21 Million At The Box Office On Friday
The latest Wolverine movie proved to be incredibly popular with moviegoers on Friday.
Audiences were more than willing to cough up the price of a ticket to see the beloved Marvel character’s latest cinematic adventure in theaters. The summer’s final superhero adventure had no trouble climbing to the top of the box office on Friday.
Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold’s The Wolverine easily destroyed its competition by generating an modest $21 million on Friday. This put it way ahead of the other films currently vying for your attention in what has proved to be a very crowded and competitive summer season.
Although this figure is definitely great news for 20th Century Fox, it’s considerably less than the business generated by the last Wolverine movie. X-Men Origins: Wolverine managed to pull in around $34 million on opening day back in 2009.
The film’s box office performance on Friday has caused industry insiders to readjust their predictions for Logan’s Japanese adventure. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the picture is expected to make around $56 million by the time the weekend wraps up. This is slightly lower than the $65 million predicted earlier this week.
The Wolverine isn’t the only movie doing strong business at the box office on Friday. Director James Wan’s creepy horror flick The Conjuring is proving that it has stronger legs than other genre films released earlier this year. The movie generated an additional $7.4 million on Friday, pushing its domestic total to $69.1 million.
Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 2 was also incredibly popular with moviegoers. Although it’s been in theaters for a few weeks, the movie still managed to bring home $4.8 million. This was enough scratch to put the film in third place on Friday. It’s domestic total presently stands at $295 million.
Fruitvale Station and The Way, Way Back both opened in more theaters on Friday. The films generated $1.4 million and $970,000, respectively.
