Mama June Shannon Legally Blind Due To Childhood Cataracts

Mama June Shannon is legally blind due to cataracts she had as a child.

Honey Boo Boo’s mom reportedly continues to struggle with her vision. A TLC spokesperson said the reality TV star didn’t receive proper treatment for her cataracts as a child.

“She can’t have surgery because they believe it could do more harm than good. The damages are that bad,” the rep explained to the Daily Mail.

Although Mama June isn’t completely blind, she still has difficulty seeing things from a distance. During the first season of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Shannon can be seen squinting while reading the numbers at a bingo game.

During another episode of the hit TLC series, Mama June struggles to keep up with her family during a trip to a go-kart track. Shannon’s vision is reportedly so bad that she cannot legally drive a car.

“I’m not going to lie to you, my eyesight was a little blurry,” she told the cameras.

Fans can also spot June squinting to read the screen of her cell phone in another episode of the series. This led some people to believe that she was going blind. Shannon also has trouble putting on Honey Boo Boo’s makeup for her pageants.

“My mama better stick to couponing and stay away from the makeup table,” Alana said in one episode.

Mama June will at least get a break from the pageant scene going forward. Shannon recently explained to the folks at In Touch magazine that Honey Boo Boo is officially retiring.

“We’re done. We haven’t done a pageant for a while, because we’re so busy with our show and school and life in general,” the matriarch told the publication.
