A 45-year-old man died shortly after winning a beer drinking contest in Spain.
According to the Huffington Post , Joaquín Alcaraz Gracia won the annual beer drinking contest in the Gea y Truyols district of Murcia by drinking six liters (about 12.5 pints) of beer in 20 minutes. Sadly, Gracia didn’t live to celebrate the victory.
The Local reports that Gracia started vomiting after the contest and then went into cardiac arrest. Gracia was taken to a local hospital but passed away shortly after arrival.
Antonio Alcaraz told Spanish newspaper Hoy: “He had drunk six litres of beer, and when he won he lifted the trophy. Then he just started to vomit without stopping and he never spoke again.”
The exact cause of death has not been determined but officials believe that it may have had something to do with the massive amount of alcohol Gracia consumed in just 20 minutes.
Local mayor José Manuel Gracia defended the annual contest saying that the event has been held for the last 15 years without a fatality. Gracia did say, however, that all future binge drinking events have been suspended for the time being.
