Kevin Spacey Says Netflix’s ‘House Of Cards’ Is Game Changer
Kevin Spacey and his Netflix political drama House of Cards made television history on Thursday when it received Primetime Emmy nominations.
Netflix became the first online TV outlet to be recognized by the Academy with nine nominations in all.
Kevin Spacey, who stars as the scheming Democrat Francis Underwood in the series, was aware of the significance of the recognition. Showtracker got a hold of Spacey, before he went to work shooting his new movie.
Asked about what he thought of the significance of the nominations as a historic event in the industry Spacey said,
“It’s pretty great, pretty great for the show. We got nine nominations, which is extraordinary because we are the new kids on the block. But also, there were all these questions swirling around: ‘Would we be able to break through because of the way the show is distributed?’ It’s a fantastic acknowledgment for MRC and Netflix and the show.”
Kevin Spacey also says that House of Cards is “the new kid on the block, and for us to break through in such a competitive field with so much great work being done, it’s incredibly satisfying and a great acknowledgment for the show. It’s just wonderful that the academy has recognized the show in so many categories.”
Spacey says that the fact that this new medium is recognized by the industry is great and hopefully more companies get involved and put out competitive shows. He adds that it creates more jobs for writers, directors, and actors.
Kevin Spacey is an award winning actor of film and television, who has had a long and illustrious career in show business with movies such as American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential, Superman Returns, and many others.
The Primetime Emmy awards ceremony airs on Sept. 22 on CBS.
