Sharknado 2 is all set to take a bite out of SyFy next year.
The sequel to the network’s cult favorite moves the shark-related madness to the wilds of New York City. SyFy recently confirmed that producers are definitely plotting another adventure.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , Sharknado scored decent ratings when it debuted last week. However, the film’s unexpected popularity on Twitter prompted the network and production company The Asylum to seriously consider making another one.
SyFy’s Thomas Vitale said in a recent statement:
Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm — on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that ‘Sharknado 2’ will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.
It’s unclear if writer Thunder Levin and director Anthony C. Ferrante will return for the follow-up. Although Tara Reid said that she’s definitely down for another round of shark attacks, it’s unknown if SyFy has a place for her in the sequel.
The Wrap reports that the name Sharknado 2 is just a placeholder. The official title is still up in the air as of this writing.
Before they spend too much time working on a clever name, SyFy is asking its fans for a little assistance. The cable network is hoping to use its new-found popularity on social media to power an upcoming Sharknado 2 -naming contest.
The folks at Buzzfeed recently assembled a list of possible sequels. Included in the bunch are Sharknado 2: Aftersharks , Sharkicane , and Sharkcano . A fake poster for Aftersharks , starring Amanda Bynes and Randy Quaid, is included below.
If you missed the original airing of Sharknado , then you can check out SyFy’s encore presentation of the Ian Ziering and Tara Reid flick this Thursday (July 18) at 9 pm ET.
