Bullied Gay Teen Posts Suicide Note On Twitter Before Taking Own Life
Albuquerque, NM — A high school student who tried to help bullied students decided to take his own life after years of being bullied himself.
According to Ray Vigil, his 17-year-old son, Carlos, was teased for everything from being gay, to having acne, to being slightly overweight.
“We found out three years ago that he was going through this stuff and we’ve been trying to help him every day since,” Vigil told KOB. “We realize he’s been going through it every day since he was in the third grade, that’s a long time for a child to hold that within himself.”
Even though he was dealing with his own struggles, Carlos wanted to help other victims, and had recently returned from North Carolina, where he lobbied an anti-bullying bill in the state legislature.
“Carlos wanted to be accepted by all, when he only needed to be accepted by himself,” Ray Vigil said.
On Saturday afternoon, posted a note on Twitter apologizing to those he had “offended” over the years.
“I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to love someone or have someone love me,” he wrote. “I guess it’s best though, because now I leave no pain onto anyone.”
Carlos couldn’t be more wrong. His mother, Jacqueline, told KRQE, “My son, he didn’t deserve this… He is not here because of bullying. It drove him over the edge.”
Former classmate Alyssa Cisneros said, “Even though now Carlos is gone, we need to focus on what he left trying to say, that bullying is a problem.”
The family plans to donate Carlos’ organs.
Unfortunately, Carlos Vigil isn’t the only bullied gay teen to take his own life this year. In January, 15-year-old Jadin Bell hanged himself on a playground structure at Central Elementary School in La Grande, Oregon. He was taken to a local hospital and put on life support. His family decided to take him off of life support after tests showed that he had no brain activity.
Do you think more needs to be done about bullying?
