Danica Patrick Wrecks Boyfriend, Apologizes
Danica Patrick had a bad day on Sunday when she wrecked boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and their fellow driver Travis Kvapil. The incident happened during the Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The wreck happened on a restart when Patrick was unable to keep control of her car. She collected both Stenhouse and Kvapil, ending hers and Kvapil’s day.
Stenhouse was also sent to the garage for about 25 laps while his team fixed his car. Sporting News reports that, later on, Danica Patrick stated of the accident:
“Either I misjudged the braking or everyone jammed up a little bit. I got sideways trying to slow down so that I didn’t drive up into the back of anyone. I just got sideways and there is nothing you can do.”
Danica also apologized to her boyfriend and Kvapil for hurting their days, notes ESPN. She stated, “I’m really sorry. At the end of the day it was me that started it, so I’m really sorry.”
Sunday’s wreck was the second time Danica and Stenhouse were involved in the same wreck, though the last one, which happened at the Coca Cola 600 in Charlotte in late May, was no Patrick’s fault. While Patrick was upset with Stenhouse after the May wreck, she later forgave him.
And Stenhouse, for his part, wasn’t upset with his girlfriend. He stated of Patrick after the race:
“It’s just part of it. I have been wrecked before and wrecked people myself… When I restarted up front, I got loose and got into [Kasey Kahne]. It is just a fine line at this racetrack of driving too hard or not driving hard enough.”
Stenhouse also initially though Kvapil was to blame for the wreck, and Kvapil was upset with Danica for the mistake. Patrick understood, explaining, “Unfortunately, it took people with me… that’s obviously not the way we want to do it, not the way I want to do it.”
After the wreck, Danica Patrick finished 37th, while Stenhouse finished 34th.
