Rachel Bilson: ‘Bling Ring’ Was ‘Weird,’ Glorified Real-Life Crimes
Rachel Bilson is no fan of Sofia Coppola’s recent film The Bling Ring. That’s mostly because she was one of the real-life victims in the story that the film is based on.
Bilson, along with Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom, were among the celebrities vicitmized by the real-life “Bling Ring,” a group of shallow, fame-obsessed Los Angeles teenagers who robbed the houses ot stars in 2008 and 2009.
The group’s story is told in Coppola’s new film, but not everyone is pleased with The Bling Ring‘s subject material.
Bilson, who lost thousands of dollars in jewelry and other personal effects to the Bling Ring, told Cosmo UK:
“I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot people. It’s important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget.”
Hilton was also disturbed by the film, despite allowing Coppola to use her home to recreate some of the scenes for it:
“I was really emotional watching it,” she said in May. “During some parts of it, I literally had tears in my eyes and I wanted to cry.”
Bilson could have had it worse, though. According to the real-life Bling Ringers, one of the members actually took a No. 2 in the actress’ bathroom during the robbery.
“We were in Rachel [Bilson’s] bathroom and Rachel just had to go, so she just … yeah. I remember the incident so well,” Bling Ringer Nick Prugo said in an interview. “I can recall the smell, which is really nasty, disgusting.”
That scene was not depicted in the film.
