Liam Hemsworth As Edward Snowden In A Possible Biopic?
Liam Hemsworth (Star Trek) is being eyed to potentially play Edward Snowden in a biopic of the former National Security Agency contractor.
Salt and Patriot Games director Phillip Noyce has talked about his interest in making a film about the NSA leaker.
Noyce said that Snowden’s story is interesting to him because it’s “a movie that’s playing out before our eyes, even though we can’t see anything.”
Snowden is a fugitive who is currently holed up at the Moscow airport seeking asylum. If extradited to the US he faces espionage charges.
In an interview with NBC News Noyce said,
“We can’t see the hero or the villain, the central character. Like my last big movie, Salt, it’s a story where you’re not quite certain if you’re dealing with a heroine or a villain. And we may not be certain until the end of the movie or even beyond that.”
He added,
“That’s a beautiful duality to deal with when you’re making a story or watching a movie. You can speculate he’s motivated by complete unselfish motives through belief in protecting worldwide public interests. Or you can speculate he was himself a victim of knowing that notoriety might bring him immortality.”
Noyce is clearly fascinated with this case and has eyed Liam Hemsworth as a possible actor to play the role of Snowden.
“He’s perfectly positioned as a rising star,” the Australian filmmaker said. “I think he’ll probably be one of the great ones. His older brother, Chris (Thor), could also play him but Liam looks more like an every man. I think he’d be perfect.”
Noyce also revealed that another international fugitive, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange would be featured in the film.
The film would potentially begin with The Guardian’s revelation that Snowden was the leak in the classified documents spy case.
