A new trailer for the Matt Damon sci-fi flick Elysium has arrived online.
The upcoming summer movie is the latest endeavor from writer-director Neill Blomkamp. In addition to Damon, the action-packed drama also stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, and William Fichtner.
The film takes place in a dystopian future where the poor live on Earth while the rich reside in a gorgeous city orbiting the planet. This space station, known as Elysium, is heavily protected; anyone who attempts to leave Earth for the city is shot down without hesitation.
Matt Damon stars as Max De Costa, a dying man who has only five days left to live. Since technology exists on Elysium that can ultimately save his life, he embarks on a quest to infiltrate this orbiting utopia using a cybernetic suit that’s surgically attached to his ailing body.
Although he originally sets out to save his own neck, it’s clear from the trailer for Elysium that Matt Damon’s character will attempt to bring equality to the masses. Along the way, he’ll have to deal with a wicked leader (Jodie Foster) and a bounty hunter who wants his head (Sharlto Copley).
With the release date lurking just around the corner, the promotional team behind Neill Blomkamp’s recent effort has pulled out all the stops. The Inquisitr previously covered the first TV spot for the sci-fi flick. Apparently Sony and TriStar Pictures really want to get your attention.
Produced by Peter Jackson, Blomkamp’s District 9 was a success for TriStar when it arrived in theaters in 2009. The $30 million sci-fi flick earned an impressive $115 million during its domestic run. When you take its foreign receipts into consideration, the movie managed to bring home $210 million.
Elysium sports a budget of around $90 million and an all-star cast. In other words, TriStar is hoping to replicate the success of Blomkamp’s previous effort by upping the ante. The film opens on August 9.
