Serena Williams Vs. Andy Murray Buzz: She Says It Might Be ‘Fun’
A Serena Williams versus Andy Murray Las Vegas exhibition match is the subject of some buzz after the two tennis stars have proved to be two of the very few cool heads appearing in Wimbledon 2013.
Ridiculous early losses like Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal have jolted a Wimbledon 2013 that sometimes seems to be less about playing tennis and more about not falling flat on your rear end.
Number one women’s tennis player Serena Williams is one of the sport’s all-time greats, and much of the time it doesn’t seem as if she can find a competitor to give her a real fight. She regularly romps over arch-nemesis Sharapova, who’s already out of this tournament anyway.
As a result, it’s only natural to speculate on whether or not she could take on a top-ranked male player like Andy Murray. Is Serena Williams vs. Andy Murray likely to be a real match coming to a tennis court near you?
The buzz started on Twitter, where a lot of rumors go to die. But apparently the tennis greats are willing to talk about this one.
World number two men’s player Andy Murray mused in his column at BBC Sport about the idea:
“I have been challenged by someone on Twitter to taking on Serena Williams. I’d be up for it, why not?
“I’ve never hit with her but she’s obviously an incredible player and I think people would be interested to see the men play against the women to see how the styles match up. It’s happened in the past with Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. How about Las Vegas as a venue?
With the ball on her court, Serena Williams seemed surprised and flattered to hear about the offer. She told reporter Howard Fendrich:
“Really? He wants to play me? Is he sure? That would be fun. I doubt I’d win a point, but that would be fun…
“He’s probably one of the top three people I definitely don’t want to play. But maybe we can have a little bit of a showdown. That would be fine…He gets no serves….”
Who would win in a Serena Williams vs. Andy Murray three-set match?
