Cameron Diaz Will Star As Miss Hannigan In 'Annie'

Cameron Diaz has signed on to star as Miss Hannigan in the upcoming Annie remake.

Sony's Columbia Pictures was thrown a curve ball earlier this month when Sandra Bullock decided to pass on the role. Since the studio is looking to get the project in front of the camera later this year, producers scrambled to find someone to tackle the part of Miss Hannigan.

Columbia apparently wasted no time in finding someone else for the role. According to The Wrap, Cameron Diaz agreed to play mean Miss Hannigan in the Annie remake producers Will Smith and Jay-Z are currently putting together over at Sony.

Carol Burnett famously portrayed the head of the orphanage that Annie calls home in director John Huston's 1982 adaptation of the classic comic strip. While other actresses have played the character over the years, Burnett's performance definitely stands out from the pack.

Miss Hannigan was one of the key roles in the remake producers had yet to fill. Deadline reports Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhane Wallis will play Annie, while White House Down star Jamie Foxx will portray a modern version of the Daddy Warbucks character.

The folks at Columbia Pictures originally had their sights set on Sandra Bullock. However, negotiations ultimately broke down earlier this month. This marks the second time the actress has passed on the role. Now that she's out of the picture, Cameron Diaz will bring the character to life.

Director Will Gluck will step behind the camera for the Annie remake. Unless the production hits a speed bump along the way, Columbia Pictures hopes to have the flick in theaters on December 25, 2014.

Diaz can be seen next in director Ridley Scott's The Counselor. The actress is also attached to star in The Other Woman with Kate Upton, Agent: Century 21, and director Jake Kasdan's upcoming comedy Sex Tape. Fans of the actress should have plenty to keep them busy for a while.
