Wimbledon 2013: Sharapova Loses In Major Upset
Wimbledon 2013 might be one of those tournaments. Maria Sharapova lost to Larcher de Brito on Wednesday in one of the most shocking upsets at the All England Club.
On Monday, Spaniard Rafael Nadal was eliminated on the first round in a stunner. Fast forward to Wednesday, and not only Sharapova but also Roger Federer are now out as reported by The Inquisitr.
It was not only a shocking result, but the noise levels were hard to ignore. Michelle Larcher de Brito took the match winning convincingly 6-3, 6-4.
In paper, it seemed like Sharapova was on a clear path to the finals, being ranked third at the tournament this year while de Brito was ranked 13.
But it was not to be for the Russian player; her rival outplayed her at every turn and she prevailed.
Sharapova slipped several times during the match and indicated to one of the officials that the court was “dangerous.”
Speaking to the BBC after the match, Sharapaova had this to say about the court conditions:
“There’s lot of grass that’s been cut and not been swept up. So there’s a lot of dead grass, so it’s not been easy. It’s a tough court to play on.”
As to her game on this day she added, “I just wasn’t there, she (Lercher de Brito) played really great tennis. All the credit to her she played really well from start to finish.”
Sharapova was also treated on the sidelines a couple of times during the game when her trainer came to tend to her and actually left the court for nine minutes to get stretched out.
It was not stated whether she suffered from an injury, but she said her hip seemed to be a little bit strained.
Other injuries at Wimbledon today had Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Victoria Azarenka, and John Isner among the seven players to retire or not start matches due to injuries.
In addition, Caroline Wozniacki lost in straight sets after injuring her ankle early in the match.
