Kristen Bell Proposes To Dax Shepard After DOMA Ruling

Kristen Bell proposed to Dax Shepard on Twitter Wednesday following the Supreme Court’s ruling to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s decision to overturn Proposition 8.

Bell and Shepard became engaged in 2009 after dating for two years, but they said they would not get married until gay marriage was legal in their home state.

“The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant,” Bell told The Advocate in 2012. “Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”

And they weren’t kidding. Shortly after it was announced that the Supreme Court had ruled DOMA unconstitutional, Bell took to Twitter and wrote, “@daxshepard1 will you marry me?”

Shepard responded with, “DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!”

The couple, who have been together for six years, welcomed their first child together, a daughter, in March. Earlier this month, Bell revealed that motherhood wasn’t what she thought it would be.

“It’s actually better than I expected,” Bell said. “It’s pretty wonderful.”

She also spoke highly of Shepard’s parenting.

“It’s like he’s just made a new best friend,” Bell said. “He just talks to her all the time. And sings to her all day. It’s wonderful.”
