New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested by two police officers Wednesday morning.
The charges against Henandez are currently undisclosed, but the 23-year-old has been under investigation in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was found less than a mile from Hernandez’s home last week.
The body of Odin Lloyd was found June 17 at an industrial park near Hernandez’s home. He died from several gunshot wounds, and, according to the Boston Globe , he was killed where his body was found. Hernandez was seen on video with Lloyd just hours before he was murdered. One video was taken in North Attleboro, and another was taken on Fayston Street in Boston.
Lloyd, a semi-professional basketball player, was dating the sister of Hernandez’s girlfriend. Police said his body was found near a car registered to Hernandez.
Hernandez was not initially a suspect in the murder, but a vehicle rented in his name surfaced as a key piece of evidence in the investigation. Two law enforcement sources said that Hernandez was not cooperating with police, but he later complied. However, the tight end even went so far as to destroy his home security system as well as a cell phone before police searched his home on a warrant. Police believed that Hernandez had hired a “team of house cleaners” Monday.
Attorney Michael Fee said Tuesday that no arrest warrant had been issued for his client, but Hernandez was led out of his home with his hands behind his back — presumably handcuffed — and put in the back of a North Attleboro police cruiser around 8:45 am Wednesday. About five police cruisers were outside Hernandez’s home at the time.
Aaron Hernandez is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Attleboro District Court.
