Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams Start War Of Words
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have been trading barbs recently and it has nothing to do with tennis.
Williams, who was recently criticized for her comments regarding the Steubenville rape case, caught some more flack this weekend from her Tennis rival Sharapova.
In her Rolling Stone interview, Williams criticized an anonymous tennis player who many people believe was Sharapova.
Williams said: “There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest … She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring. She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”
Sharapova, who is dating Williams’ ex-boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov, didn’t appreciate the comments.
The tennis player said today that she didn’t like to focus on her private life and that she doesn’t like the media trying to create rivalries. Still, it’s hard not to notice just a little bit of tension between the two players.
Sharapova said: “I know everyone tries to create rivalries between us here and there. I just think she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else that’s just getting attention and controversy … If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids.”
According to the Big Lead, Williams is reportedly involved with coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Mourtoglou, who recently went through a divorce, has not commented on the relationship.
Williams recently beat Sharapova at the French Open and according to USA Today Williams has won their last 13 matches. Sharapova, who is currently ranked No. 3, is hoping to change that this year at Wimbledon.
