Justin Bieber Wins Favorite Artist At 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards
Canada still loves Justin Bieber. The teen star won the Favorite Artist trophy at 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday, which was voted for by fans.
The 19-year-old beat out fellow native nominees Carly Rae-Jepsen, rapper and producer Drake, rockers Marianas Trench and dance titan Deadmau5 for the Fave Artist/Group award at the Toronto event.
Bieber was also nominated for Best International Video by a Canadian artist category for “As Long As You Love Me” featuring Big Sean. Other artists in the slot were Jepsen, Tegan and Sara, Walk Off The Earth and Avril Lavigne who eventually claimed the prize for “Here’s to Never Growing Up.”
Although controversy, some of which is evidently over-egged, surrounds Bieber following incidents on and off his Believe tour, his Favorite Artist win will likely be a welcome honor for the pop star, despite being a no-show on the night.
Other winners on the night were pop/country star Taylor Swift, who was able to receive her Favorite International Artist or Group award in person as she was in Toronto for two Red album tour shows at the same time as the MuchMusic Video Awards.
While the Biebs claimed the Favorite Artist award, there were plenty of plaudits for other artists nominated.
Drake, who made a surprise appearance at the MMVA’s, picked up Director of the Year and Hip-Hop Video of the Year for gongs for “Started from the Bottom.” Marianas Trench won Fave Video and Pop Video of the Year for their hit “Desperate Measures, while deadmau5 bagged the Dance Video of the Year prize for “The Veldt” featuring Chris James.
Meanwhile, in the International Video of the Year field, Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” triumphed over Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors,” Ed Sheeran’s “Give Me Love” and Nicki Minaj’s “Va Va Voom.”
The event was hosted by south Korean rapper Psy, who wrapped the show with a performance of his current K-Pop single “Gentleman.” Other artist who took to the stage on the night included Lavigne, Philip Phillips, Lovato and Sheeran.
Bieber is currently on a break from his Believe tour and will kick off the stateside leg on June 22 at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center. The singer recently added around 30 dates to the tourto include Latin America, New Zealand, Asia, and Australia.
For now though, the Favorite Artist at this year’s MuchMusic Video Awards has been seen at various music events over the weekend, including Cody Simpson’s L.A. Club Live show and Kanye West’s listening party for his new album Yeezus.
