Rupert Murdoch Files For Divorce From Wife Of 14 Years
News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from wife Wendi Deng Murdoch.
Originally reported by Deadline on Thursday, Murdoch filed for divorce in the New York State Supreme Court, and News Corp confirmed the report shortly after it was made.
It is unknown whether the divorce was discussed between the couple, as Times reporter Amy Chozick tweeted “Rupert has filed for divorce. Wendi has been informed.”
According to Chozick, the filing said that the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.”
Deng, Murdoch’s third wife, married the media mogul in 1999, and the two have been married for fourteen years. The couple has two daughters together.
Deng has infamously stood by Murdoch during controversies against him in the past. When someone came at him with a foam pie during his 2011 hearing on News Corp’s phone hacking scandal, she jumped to her feet and lunged at the attacker.
This will be Murdoch’s third divorce. He divorced his second wife, Anna, in 1999, which resulted in a $1.7 billion settlement (believed to be one of the most expensive divorce settlements of all time).
Murdoch’s net worth is estimated to be around $11.2 billion.
His company is currently in the midst of splitting up into two separate entities: Media and entertainment. Both would remain under Murdoch’s control. Thursday’s divorce announcement won’t likely impact the proceedings, as Deng does not have voting power int he company.
