‘The Purge’ Sequel Already In Development At Universal
A sequel to The Purge is already in the works at Universal.
The studio is wasting no time capitalizing on the success of the low-budget horror flick. The $3 million thriller managed to rake in an impressive $36 million during its first three days in theaters.
Written and directed by James DeMonaco, the film finds a family attempting to protect themselves during a 12-hour period when all crime is legal. Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey star in the flick.
The Purge proved that you don’t necessarily need superheroes, big stars, or strong reviews to put butts in cinema seats. The horror movie managed to outgun several of its big-budget competitors last weekend. In fact, the flick managed to dethrone Universal’s own Fast and Furious 6 from the top of the box office.
Universal Pictures and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse are reportedly putting together the sequel. Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form also helped bring the film to theaters.
Unfortunately for those who are eager to get their hands on the sequel, there’s no word when the follow-up will hit the big screen. However, it’s likely the studio will want to get this project going as soon as humanly possible. Chances are The Purge sequel will get released at some point next year.
Jason Blum has found plenty of success with the horror genre in the past. The veteran producer was instrumental in getting the first Paranormal Activity off the ground. Although audiences have cooler to the franchise since its initial release, Blum and company have made quite a bit of money from the movies during their run.
Blum is no doubt hoping to replicate this success with The Purge. If the sequel proves to be as successful as the first, then moviegoers should expect annual installments until people just stop showing up.
Did you catch The Purge in theaters over the weekend? Are you excited for the sequel?
