‘Dazed & Confused’ Sequel Is Happening, Sort Of

You can now add Dazed & Confused on to the long list of 90s cult classics that are being turned into sequels. For those who aren’t familiar, Dazed & Confused documented the lives of high school and junior high kids on the last day of school in 1976. The film went on to become a cult classic for the way it portrayed stoners, geeks, and bullies.

Most notably, Dazed & Confused launched the careers of Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, and Milla Jovovich and, of course, Matthew McConaughey in a truly emblematic role. The independent film, before “going indie” was cool, struck gold during their 1993 release. That said, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the creators would want to recreate that success with a Dazed & Confused sequel. The question becomes, will it be interesting? And if it will be the same formula in a different decade? Perhaps we’ll see the actors playing older versions of the characters? It’s not what you think.

During a Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith, writer and director Richard Linklater divulged more information concerning the news of a sequel:

” I have a college comedy I’ve been working on for years that’s sort of a spiritual sequel to ‘Dazed [And Confused]. It’s set on the first weekend of college with a bunch of people when you move into where you’re going to be living and you meet all these people.”

This isn’t the only time talk about a Dazed & Confused sequel has come around. Back in 2010, Linklater suggested that he had another idea that would play more on the characters of the original film. The film which was to be titled That’s What I’m Talking About would have took place in 1980s and would see Matthew McConaughey reprise his role as the ladies man, but this time he would patrol a college.

Although is hasn’t been made yet, Linklater said that he does have that film financed. Whether it’s the spiritual sequel or the semi-quasi sequel, it looks like we’re definitely getting a companion piece to Dazed & Confused.
