Kinky Boots walked away with no less than six trophies at the 2013 Tony Awards on Sunday evening.
The musical adaptation of the hit British comedy won best musical at the ceremony. Cyndi Lauper , who provided the score of the acclaimed adaptation, also picked up a trophy for her work on the production.
Those working behind-the-scenes on Kinky Boots weren’t the only ones honored during the Tony Awards. Star Bill Porter scored a trophy for his performance in the musical.
Although Porter was recognized for his work in the adaptation, he was quick to call out co-star Stark Sands for her performance in Kinky Boots .
“You are my rock, my sword, my shield. I share this award with you. I’m gonna keep it at my house — but I share it with you,” the actor said.
Kinky Boots tells the story of a drag queen who comes to the rescue of a shoe factory that is struggling to stay afloat. In order to save the business, the company begins offering a line of unique and extraordinary footwear. The 2005 film starred Joel Edgerton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sarah-Jane Potts, and Nick Frost.
Actress Cicely Tyson also won a trophy during last night’s Tony Awards. The 88-year-old actress was honored for her work in the play The Trip to Bountiful . She received a pair of standing ovations during the ceremony.
“[I had] this burning desire to do just one more — one more great role. I didn’t want to be greedy. I just wanted one more,” Tyson told those in attendance.
Courtney B. Vance took home a trophy for best featured actor for his turn in Lucky Guy . The actor has been nominated for a Tony Award three times in the past.
“It’s a richer experience now. Being nominated is a whirlwind. Now I know how to pace myself. Besides, we’re the toast of Broadway now! That doesn’t happen very often,” Vance explained.
