Kevin Smith Doesn’t Want Your Kickstarter Money
Kevin Smith would take out a second mortgage on his home before accepting your Kickstarter money.
A handful of established filmmakers have recently jumped on the crowdfunding bandwagon to get their projects off the ground. Scrubs star Zach Braff famously came under fire after using the website to fund his upcoming flick Wish I Was Here. Rob Thomas also used Kickstarter to get his Veronica Mars movie up and running.
Although is contemporaries are starting to make the jump to crowdfunding, Kevin Smith said he isn’t interested in taking money from fans to produce his film. He’s rather folks support his efforts by purchasing a ticket at the box office.
When asked about the state of Clerks 3, the filmmaker revealed that he was preparing to go over everything with Bob Weinstein.
“I like Bob, but if he doesn’t like it and passes, then I get to go someplace else and try to finance it myself. Put my house up or something … not Kickstarter,” Smith explained.
The director said he understands why Thomas and Braff decided to use Kickstarter for their projects, but he doesn’t intend to follow them down that particular path. According to Smith, he’s already “missing the boat” on crowdfunding.
“I went through the traditional route of old, where Miramax picked up my flick and introduced me to another world. That’s my story. I can’t, like, have this second story where I’m like, ‘And then, years later I started asking other people for money!'” Kevin Smith explained.
He added, “There’s a bunch of cats like me looking to make their first film. You jump in there and soak up all that money as the big fish in that small pond, that’s money that’s not going to go to somebody who really needs it.”
Zach Braff’s Kickstarter campaign ended with a whopping $3.1 million in donations. Rob Thomas didn’t do too shabby either; the director generated $5.7 for his Veronica Mars flick.
What do you think about Kevin Smith’s thoughts on Kickstarter? Do you agree with the Clerks director?
