Google Glass Porn Ban Puts Abrupt End To First Adult Content App
Google Glass has instituted a porn ban in an effort to squash what would have been the first adult content app for the wearable computer with a head-mounted display technology.
The Google Glass porn ban comes shortly after the first porn app was released this week. Named “Tits & Glass,” the app allowed users to browse, share, and comment on pornographic content viewed on the screen.
The free app was developed by MiKandi, which bills itself as the “largest adult app store.” The company had plans to film original content with Google Glass.
“When we first announced that we were developing this app, there were knee-jerk reactions suggesting that people will watch porn on the bus and everywhere,” Jennifer McEwen, co-founder of MiKandi, told NBC News.
Asked how people would be able to continue on in public settings or business meetings if porn popped up on their screen, co-founder Jesse Adams said it would take some work.
“I think you might need to practice a poker face,” Adams said, adding that MiKandi was looking into a feature that would allow users to pause notifications.
Google Glass had a porn ban in place at the time the app was released, however. Its terms and conditions state: “We don’t allow Glassware content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material.”
Adams, who also serves as CEO for MiKandi, said the no-porn clause only showed up over the weekend.
“When we received our Glass and started developing our app two weeks ago, we went through the policy very carefully to make sure we were developing the app within the terms,” he said. “We double checked again last week when making the site live on the internet and available for install for testing during last week’s announcement. We were not notified of any changes and still haven’t been notified by Google.”
With the Google Glass porn ban in place, Adams said “Tits & Glass” will be re-worked to comply with the policies.
