Angelina Jolie Makes First Public Appearance Following Double Mastectomy [Video]
Angelina Jolie hit the red carpet for the first time since her double mastectomy.
The actress showed up in London for the premiere of Brad Pitt’s zombie flick World War Z. This is the first public appearance the actress has made since having the procedure.
“I’ve been very happy just to see the discussion about women’s health expanded, and that means the world to me. After losing my mom to these issues, I’m very grateful for it,” Angelina Jolie told the BBC at the event.
Although the Wanted star didn’t appear to have a problem discussing the surgery during the World War Z premiere, Jolie’s husband still had difficulty talking about his wife’s procedure.
“I get a little emotional about it, because of just the act itself, what she did for our family, and then telling her story to others. What it means to others has really surprised me. It was a very moving experience, it certainly brought our family tighter together. It’s just the bravest thing to me,” Pitt explained.
Angelina Jolie told reporters that her Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star has been nothing but supportive through the whole ordeal. She added that she was “very, very lucky” to have Pitt in her life.
The actress revealed earlier this year that she underwent the double mastectomy after doctors said she had a 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer. In order to prevent this from happening, Jolie decided to have the controversial procedure.
“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could,” she wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times. Sadly, the actress lost her aunt to breast cancer last month. Her mother passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 56.
The actress has been absent from the big screen since the 2010 Johnny Depp thriller The Tourist. However, she did lend her voice to Kung Fu Panda 2 in 2011. She is slated to make her return to theaters with Maleficent in 2014.
