Neymar cried profusely during the Brazilian nation anthem just moments before his last match for Santos.
The 21-year-old revealed on Saturday that he agreed to join Barcelona and bid an emotional farewell in his final game against Flamengo.
Neymar thanked his supporters in a written statement and admitted it was an honor to play for Santos.
“I want to thank the fans for these nine incredible years,” he wrote. “My feeling for the club and the fans will never change. It is eternal!
“Only a club like Santos could give me everything I have experienced on and off the field. I thank the wonderful fans who supported me even in the most difficult moments.”
Neymar was held scoreless in the 0-0 draw with Flamengo much to the delight of the Flamengo fans, who jeered his every touch, at the Mane Garrincha National Stadium.
The youngster had brought a protracted transfer saga to an end on the weekend when he chose to sign with Barcelona over eternal rivals Real Madrid.
Neymar happily admitted that joining Barcelona was a dream come true.
“Every child has a dream, either to be a player, dentist or a reporter,” he stated. “My dream was to become a professional athlete and I have achieved that.
“Today Barcelona is fulfilling my dream of going to a beautiful team.”
Neymar is one of the brightest prospects on the planet and he will showcase his talents on the world stage when Brazil hosts the upcoming Confederations Cup.
The tournament features eight teams, including World Cup champions Spain and Euro runners-up Italy and will take place from June 15 to 30.
It is not yet known when Neymar will join up with Lionel Messu and company in Barcelona, but it is assumed he will fly out after the competition.
