‘The Avengers 2’: Joss Whedon Weighs In On Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch
The Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon is still planning to use Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.
We have seen some controversy surrounding the casting choices between the two upcoming Marvel Comics based films X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Avengers 2. Both are planning to use Quicksilver in more than just cameos, and normally that wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, the film studios involved are not the same, and both are hoping the other backs out and leaves Quicksilver on the cutting room floor.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is the next film in the X-Men series by Fox. The Avengers 2 is the sophomore release of Joss Whedon’s own superhero franchise from Marvel Studios. There was once an understanding, if unspoken, that the separate studios (including Sony) would never use the same characters.
Seeing as Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are simultaneously the mutant children of X-Men mainstay Magneto and Avengers at one point, the heat is on. The two can be used by Marvel Studios as long as their identities as mutants are never brought up, and that was initially the agreement. Now the two directors, Bryan Singer and Joss Whedon, are locked in a sort of battle over who has more rights concerning them.
Neither one is backing down, as Quicksilver is planned for use in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Avengers 2.
Joss Whedon weighed in with his side of the fight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, “There are new characters. I’ve already said that we’re going to have a brother-sister team, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who were great mainstays of The Avengers when I was reading the comics as a kid.”
Joss Whedon says he hasn’t casted the characters yet, and that’s where Bryan Singer may have the advantage already. The Avengers 2 director added:
“well, besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was, everybody basically had punchy powers. ‘I can hit,’ ‘I can also hit.’ Hopefully it didn’t get too boring. But coming into the second one, he’s got super speed. She can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh.”
Basically, Joss Whedon is planning to use them as a way to expand on what can be done in The Avengers 2, and offers the fact that they were Avengers in the comics when he was a kid.
What do you think of Joss Whedon’s side of the story concerning using Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in The Avengers 2?
