‘The Hangover’ Director Todd Phillips Shoots Back At Critics With Post-Credits Sequence
The Hangover trilogy sees some of the biggest crowds in the summer when each film is released. It’s known to be one of the highest grossing comedy trilogies. That said the films aren’t insusceptible to criticism. Instead of ignoring the bout of bad criticism, director Todd Phillips has decided to respond to the criticism The Hangover trilogy has received, specifically Hangover II.
Recently Phillips was interviewed by Vanity Fair, which is strange considering their readers isn’t in line with the Hangover audience, but either way Phillips took the opportunity to slam negative critiques of his staple “hangover” formula.
Although Phillips still seems a bit miffed about the reception his last film garnered, he still changed the concept of the last two films for the upcoming Hangover III. Instead of the whole blackout set up, this time around no one is blacking out. Instead, the group’s road trip to Alan’s rehab center is derailed when drug lords decide to kidnap Doug for leverage for Mr. Chow.
Even though Phillips abandoned a repeat performance of The Hangover formula, that doesn’t mean he isn’t ready to let that criticism of the sequel go anytime soon. The director explained his approach to the third film:
“The criticisms [of ‘The Hangover Part 2?] were really about the structure — they didn’t know how this could happen to the same guys twice. ‘Who would ever have a night like that twice?’ So we were like, ‘Oh yeah? It’s going to happen three times. F–k you.'”
He explained that there is a little surprise awaiting movie goers during the credits: “But there is a little bit of a response to the critics at the end of this movie. If you stay through the credits, you’ll see in typical Hangover fashion we have another big credit moment that I think everyone will enjoy.”
It seems like The Hangover III may suffer the same fate the sequel did, at least when critics are concerned. The reviews are in and no one is really over the moon about the latest flick. As of right now a cumulative rating on Rotten Tomatoes sees the film at 25 percent. Despite this we have a feeling The Hangover III will make big bank.
