‘Expendables 3’ Adds Mickey Rourke, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan, Hints Steven Seagal
Expendables 3 has added three new cast members — well, two new cast members and one former star — in Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, and Mickey Rourke, according to star Sylvester Stallone.
(He also hinted at Steven Seagal, but nothing was confirmed at the time of this story.)
Sly took to the Twitterverse Thursday night to let fans know the big news in a series of tweets.
In the first, Stallone said, “Scouting eastern Europe and Asia … we are going all out on this one … Could be a big surprise!!”
He followed that up a minute later with, “What’s the plan? Ask Jackie Chan….”
It was another four minutes before Sly was back at it, letting fans know that Expendables 3 would take inspiration from the foreign thriller The Raid. (“Thinking about Raiding, THE RAID…think about it …”)
Stallone later tweeted that he thought the third entry in his series of nostalgic throwback films could “do better than the RAID [sic],” though he admitted it was an “excellent film.”
While it’s improbable for an American remake of a separate film to turn up as a franchise sequel, we can take Stallone’s enthusiasm to mean The Raid will furnish this new film with a few plot points.
For some insight, here’s the plot from IMDb (without giving too much away): “A SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.”
Should this hold, then it looks like Stallone and company will have to fight their way out of a tight spot.
Our remaining question: who would play the bad guy?
We could definitely see Snipes filling that role, though it’s probable all three from last night’s announcement will fight on Sly’s team. Well, we know that Rourke will, as he’s reprising his role as tattoo artist “Tool.” Here’s a collection of all the tweets:

As for Chan, I don’t think he’s ever played a bad guy. And while Snipes is usually the protagonist, he always lends a bit of anti-hero to whatever role he takes, so that one is possible.
Still, Stallone could be holding out for Steven Seagal as his bad guy. It would be a different step for the martial arts star, and it would sort of keep with what Sly did last time, picking Jean-Claude Van Damme for the heavy.
Relative newcomer Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) will direct, so you can bet that creatively, this one’s still very much in Stallone’s hands.
Do you think Expendables 3 is a good idea? Of the four names connected to it in the last 24 hours — Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Mickey Rourke, and Steven Seagal — which (if any) are the most exciting?
