Jaden Smith On Emancipation: No Way, Everything At Home Is Free!
Earlier this week, Jaden Smith was rumored to be seeking emancipation from his parents after beginning to make his own way in the world.
Jaden Smith is just 14, and parents to two of Hollywood’s perennial coolest stars. The younger Smith’s dad Will and mom Jada Pinkett Smith have been candid and open about their home life and seemingly bulletproof marriage, weathering rumors and scandals with teflon personas and consistently high public esteem.
But as awesome as Will and Jada may be, every 14-year-old including Jaden Smith may find mom and dad to be insufferably style-crimping from time to time, right?
It seems Jaden Smith’s emancipation rumors stemmed from a throwaway joke made by dad Will, who knows more than anyone that Parents Just Don’t Understand.
Apparently, Jaden and Will have joked that freedom from parental scrutiny looms for the teen when he makes a movie bigger than his dad’s hits — and Will quipped recently in Tokyo of the pair’s turn in the coming After Earth:
“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor.” The After Earth star adds, “because he really wants to have his own place … That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”
Even if Will wasn’t joking about Jaden’s permissions, it seems he and Jada won’t have an empty nest any time soon. Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen, the younger smith told the chat show host he’s “not going anywhere,” before adding:
“See, here’s the thing that you need to understand: I’m not going anywhere. The thing that people don’t get is everything at this house is free! So I can get anything and everything at his house, so I’m going to be there 20, 30 more years.”
Well, it seems Jaden Smith is at least a bit smarter than his 14-year-old peers.
