Warren Moon On Tebow: He’s Not Good Enough For The CFL
Warren Moon has some harsh words on Tim Tebow, saying the now-unemployed quarterback probably couldn’t cut it in the Canadian Football League.
Tebow was cut this week by the New York Jets after one disappointing season with the team. The Jets failed to utilize Tebow and the former Broncos quarterback did not stand out in his scattered opportunities on the field.
The situation fell apart to the point that when Jets starter Mark Sanchez struggled with inconsistency and injury late in the season, the Jets opted to turn to rookie Greg McElroy rather than start Tebow. His cut this week seemed all but inevitable.
While the quarterback now searches for a new job, Warren Moon has thoughts on Tebow and his future in football.
That future won’t be in the CFL, Moon said.
“You have to be able to throw the ball up there if anything. They throw the ball a lot. It’s only three downs, so the passing game is much more important up there and there’s a lot more field to cover,” Moon said during an interview with KILT-AM in Houston.
Moon, who played six season up north himself, said it takes an entirely different skill set than the one Tebow possesses.
“If you can’t throw the football, it doesn’t matter where you play quarterback. You have to be able to throw it. That’s his biggest problem, just being able to complete passes, be an accurate passer. I think he’s a really good athlete playing the position, but I don’t think that’s enough sometimes.”
The Montreal Alouettes own Tebow’s rights, and said he might be able to come and compete for the backup job.
Some think Tebow could still have a future in the NFL, though not as a quarterback. His size and bruising running style make him a good fit for an H-back, and Tebow’s willingness to take on any role the Jets asked of him seem to imply that he would be up for the change.
If Tim Tebow leaves the NFL, some suspect he could leave football entirely and instead work on his charitable ventures or on the lecture circuit. So Warren Moon could be right on Tebow — he won’t be headed to the CFL after all.
