Borussia Dortmund Chairman Locks Himself In Toilet During Champions League Semi-Final
Borussia Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke couldn’t bare to watch the final minutes of his club’s match-up with Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals. Instead, Watzke found himself a toilet at Santiago Bernabeu and locked himself in.
Dortmund won the first leg 4-1 in Germany and came to Spain with one goal in mind: hold off the Blancos for 90 minutes and clinch a berth in the finals for the first time since 1997.
They did just that, but not before a dramatic finish that got the best of Dortmund’s chairman.
“For the first time in my life I had to give up due to heart problems.” Watzke said on the club’s official website. “I went to the toilet for the last minutes, locked myself in, covered my ears and looked at my watch. I had all kinds of thoughts going through my head.”
The move to the toilet must have payed off as Real Madrid failed to net their third goal after scoring twice in the final seven minutes before stoppage time. Dortmund’s goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller made one crucial save after another to hold off the Blancos as the German’s now move on in hopes of their second title.
Borussia Dortmund met Juventes from Italy’s Serie A in their first Champions League title appearance in 1997 and won 3-1 after shutting down Manchester United in the semi-finals. This year’s club has been even better, and hadn’t lost a single match until the second leg on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, Dortmund has secured their spot at Wembley and will face rival Bayern Munich or another top Spanish club in FC Barcelona. Bayern Munich holds the advantage after a 4-0 win in the first leg and will look to make it an all-German final in the second leg on Wednesday.
The Champions League final will surely have it’s dramatic moments and Watzke might have to find himself another toilet. Bayern Munich has ran away with Bundesliga in 2013 and everyone knows a guy by the name of Messi who can turn things around quickly for Barcelona.
Can Borussia Dortmund win the Champions League final? Will Hans-Joachim Watzke need a new pair of trousers?
