FBI Boston Boat: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Hiding Place Put Into Storage

Boston, MA — The FBI is putting the famous “Boston boat” where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was hiding into drydock.

The Boston Marathon bombing suspect was captured last Friday night hunkering down into the boat which was sitting in the backyard of a Watertown, Mass. resident. He had apparently been hiding there for a full day while SWAT teams and other police and law enforcement agencies, combed the area in the massive manhunt.

While the police appeared to have the entire neighborhood locked down, the owner, David Henneberry, noticed blood on his boat (which is ironically named “Slip Away II”) bravely pulled back the tarp, and saw the wounded suspect lying in it, bleeding. He called 911, and the rest is history.

The FBI isn’t saying where it stashed the so-called FBI Boston boat. “The boat was processed for evidence at the scene and then moved on Friday to an undisclosed FBI facility for storage, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.”

While the FBI removed the bullet-riddled boat from the Watertown crime scene, police also transported the suspected bomber to a federal prison hospital 40 miles west of Boston. He was listed in fair condition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center before the transfer. He will now spend an indefinite period of time at Fort Devens, a decommissioned US Army base, while he awaits trial on federal weapons of mass destruction charge, making him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Further federal and state charges in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings are likely as the investigation moves forward.

The FBI also searched a New Bedford, Mass., landfill, but the spokesman similarly declined to provide any details as to what the agency was looking for at that location, although various media reports suggest that the FBI was trying to retrieve a laptop that belonged to one of the Tsarnaev brothers.

An internet fundraising drive is underway to buy Henneberry a new boat to replace the one that the FBI moved into evidence storage although he says he’d rather have any money donated to the charity set up for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
