Guillermo Del Toro Developing Thriller For HBO

Guillermo del Toro is an increasingly busy man. The director is reportedly putting together a thriller for the folks over at HBO.

The filmmaker has a wide variety of projects on his table at the moment. In addition to the haunted house flick Crimson Peak, del Toro is currently in the early stages of a Pacific Rim sequel.

It’s being reported that Guillermo del Toro is putting together a series for HBO. The thriller will be based on the manga series Monster by Naoki Urasawa. Sherlock and Dr. Who scribe Steven Thompson will co-write the series while del Toro will direct.

Although Naoki Urasawa’s Monster is currently getting the small screen treatment by the Pan’s Labyrinth director, this isn’t the first time the series has been adapted. The story was previously chronicled in an animated series.

Monster is described as follows:

“An ice-cold killer is on the loose, and brilliant Dr. Kenzo Tenma is the only one who can stop him! Conspiracies, serial murders, and a scathing indictment of hospital politics are all masterfully woven together in this compelling manga thriller. Tenma risks his promising medical career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unbeknownst to him, the child is destined for a terrible fate.”

The HBO series will re-team Guillermo del Toro with Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford. The trio previously worked together on the proposed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.

Although the director and Tom Cruise were ready to roll on the project, del Toro ended up butting heads with Universal Pictures. Since the studio didn’t want an R-rated movie, the filmmaker decided to scrap the project for the time being.

The director’s big-budget action flick Pacific Rim, a movie that pits robots against giant monsters, is set to arrive in theaters across North America on July 12.
