Brooklyn, NY — In a potentially tumultuous situation, a 17-year-old man was arrested by NYPD officers for allegedly harassing a Jewish commuter on a Brooklyn subway train.
The incident became very chaotic as bystanders inside the car and on the station platform became very boisterous with the officers until backup arrived to tamp things down before the situation got out of hand. Many of the passengers filmed the commotion with their cell phones.
The initial two responding officers had a heck of time taking down and cuffing the suspect as you can see from the video embedded below.
What brought about the arrest in the first place is that teenager allegedly got very aggressive with a Jewish passenger who was wearing a yarmulke and just wanted to be left alone. The suspect who reportedly felt disrespected by the other man began making anti-Semitic remarks as tensions escalated. The teen also allegedly threatened to kill the man and, in an apparent reference to the Holocaust, reportedly said “they should have killed you all.” The victim took a picture of the suspect with his smartphone, but the suspect swiped the phone and deleted the image.
NYPD cops were alerted to the confrontation by the conductor and were waiting for the train to pull in to the Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum station. Police also arrested a woman, age 22, who got into the mix and allegedly assaulted one of the responding NYPD officers on the subway platform.
The teen suspect was arrested on eight charges including grand larceny, which was charged as a hate crime, resisting arrest, and harassment. The woman was arrested for obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Based on the footage below, how do you think the NYPD squad handled this tense situation inside the Brooklyn subway station?
