Watertown Explosions And Shooting: One Suspect Arrested, One Still At Large
5:27 am UPDATE: The Watertown suspect who died at a local hospital suffered multiple gunshot wounds and possibly shrapnel wounds, according to doctor statement at an early morning press conference. The suspect was taken to the same hospital where Boston Marathon bombing victims are still recovering. The suspects allegedly shot a transit officer at some point during the late evening hours. After reportedly carjacking a Mercedes and driving around for about half and hour, the suspects allowed the driver to get out of the car and leave unharmed.
5:10 UPDATE: Homemade bombs by the MIT shooting suspects were reportedly distributed around the Watertown neighborhood. The FBI has not yet confirmed any a link with the Boston Marathon bombings.
4:45 UPDATE: Boston Police officers asked Bill Hemmer of Fox News if a man in a black t-shirt had walked by the area. The officers reportedly want to speak with the unfolding events around Watertown. Hemmer is about 10 miles from the Watertown shooting crime scene and located near the Boston Marathon finish line. Police officers reportedly believe the man was headed back to the marathon area. A pressure cooker style bomb was allegedly used during the stand-off in Watertown.
4 am UPDATE: Although multiple news outlets are reporting that the MIT shooting/Watertown shoot-out suspects are the Boston Marathon bomber suspects as well, there has not yet been any official confirmation from the FBI. The suspects named by multiple media outlets during the manhunt were ultimately incorrect. Neither Mike Mulgeta or Sunil Tripathi were at all linked to the MIT shooting, Watertown shooting, or the Boston Marathon bombings.
3:40 UPDATE: SWAT tanks loaded with personnel reportedly converged upon the Watertown shooting scene. Law enforcement officers have established a 20-block perimeter. They are going house by house and street by street in search of the suspect. Police officers are encouraging residents to shelter in place. The agencies involved in searching for the MIT shooting suspect reportedly feel the area is now locked down securely.
3:17 am UPDATE: The Watertown suspect taken to the hospital has reportedly died, according to the White House Press Corps Twitter feed. The death of the suspect has not yet been confirmed by law enforcement sources.
3:03 am UPDATE: The second Watertown suspect was spotted running, police officers giving chase and expanding their perimeter, according to scanner traffic.
3 am UPDATE: The Watertown shooting scene is still active and a heavy police presence remains. Officers are still looking for the missing MIT shooting suspect. The suspect taken into custody earlier was reportedly taken to an area hospital.
2:45 am UPDATE: The Watertown shooting suspect is a light-skinned male with curly dark hair, according to the latest alert via police scanner traffic. The man should be considered armed and very dangerous, the alert also noted. The FBI is now reportedly “engaged” with their law enforcement partners to determine if there is a connection between the MIT shooting/Watertown shooting suspects and the Boston bombings.
Residents interviewed by Fox News stated they heard the sound of multiple explosions. The sounds may have been intentional detonations by the Cambridge bomb squad. The FBI just recently released close-up photos of both suspects.
2:30 am UPDATE: The Watertown stand-off continues with more reports of shots fired. At least one neighborhood resident posted photos of bullet holes in his wall as a result of the “shoot-out.” About a dozen FBI agents in bullet proof vests and a SWAT team are on the scene helping police officers locate the missing MIT shooting suspect.
The Boston Globe referred to the MIT shooting suspects also as Boston Marathon bombing suspects, but the FBI maintains it is too soon to speculate about a connecti0n. The Cambridge bomb squad is also on the scene in Watertown.

During an interview with the Boston Globe, neighborhood resident Peter Jennings, 33, said he was sound asleep when he was awakened by a “huge boom” about 1 am. “It sounded like a stick of dynamite went off. I looked out the window, and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen – blue light after blue light after blue light.”

Watertown, MA – A shooting which began on the MIT campus resulted in a police chase into Watertown. Two suspects identified as light-skinned and dark-skinned Middle Eastern males reportedly fled from the Cambridge campus in a stolen black Mercedes. One suspected was arrested around 2 am. Police scanner traffic noted multiple gunshots and possible explosives. The MIT shooting suspects reportedly had grenades.

The MIT shooting resulted in the death of a campus police officer. Speculation about a connection to the Boston Marathon bombings spread quickly via social. A link between the two crimes has not yet been officially addressed or concerned.

At least one police officer was injured during the Watertown stand-off. Police scanner indicates that another police officer may have died during the incident.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are still actively involved in the hunt for the missing MIT shooting suspect in the Watertown area. Prior to the arrest of the first suspect police officer were ordered to retreat from the area and to establish a secure perimeter. A robot and canine units were brought in to help with the search for the suspects and possible explosives.

Communications on the law enforcement scanner indicate that the unnamed men were possibly armed with long rifles and automatic weapons. Law enforcement officers utilized helicopter units and a chopper from a local Fox News affiliate to scan the area. Weather conditions and murky night skies hampered visibility.

The FBI, ATF, and local and state law enforcement did ultimately catch two men identified as Boston Marathon bombing suspects. The incorrect names used by local media outlets and ultimately news agencies from around the country were allegedly leaked by a some type of an unnamed police source. The young men originally named in this article as the manhunt unfolded are not involved in any of the criminal acts and are not persons of interest or suspects in the Boston area shootings and bombings.
