Disney To Release ‘Star Wars’ Movies Annually
Disney plans to release new Star Wars movies annually beginning in 2015.
The company revealed at this year’s CinemaCon that a new installment in George Lucas’ beloved franchise will arrive in theaters every year starting with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII.
Although it’s been widely reported that Disney intends to capitalize on the series after acquiring Lucasfilm for $4 billion last year, the studio has kept its plans very close to its chest.
The recent announcement suggests that multiple projects will be in development at once. However, specifics regarding the movies and their respective stories are still unclear. Despite the lack of information, it would seem that Disney will be extremely busy in the coming years.
Disney representatives stated that a total of five new movies will arrive in theaters between 2015 and 2020. While it’s unlikely the studio will quit after this batch of films have been released, no further details about the franchise’s future were revealed during CinemaCon.
The studio’s timetable suggests that a new Star Wars will arrive in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Disney chairman Alan Horn explained that there will be “pictures derived from that universe” in-between the proper sequels. Fans should anticipate these spin-offs to hit screens in 2016 and 2018.
It’s currently believed that director J.J. Abrams’ and writer Michael Arndt’s Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters at some point during 2015. Unfortunately for those looking for a specific date, Disney hasn’t revealed when the highly-anticipated sequel will be released.
Rumors have been circulating for a while regarding the proposed Star Wars spin-offs. Everyone from Yoda to Han Solo to Boba Fett have been listed as possible candidates for these standalone films. Although Disney has stated that new films are on the way, no additional information regarding the projects was discussed at CinemaCon.
