‘The Bible’ Producers Discuss Controversy With Oprah [Video]
The producers of the miniseries The Bible recently discussed the controversy surrounding the show with Oprah.
Husband and wife producing team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey recently appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter to discuss some of the issues viewers had with the History Channel miniseries.
Although many people thought Satan looked a little too much like President Obama, the producers insisted that this was not intentional. Downey seemed particularly upset about the controversy surrounding the similarities. The actress said she felt the show was “hijacked” by folks on social media sites.
“The night before that broke in the news, Jesus had made his first appearance on the screen and I was so looking forward to Monday and knowing that Jesus would be on the lips of everyone,” Roma Downey told Oprah during the interview.
Downey explained that she was disappointed that Satan was the topic of online conversation the following day. The producer added that both she and Mark Burnett have nothing but love and respect for the president. The similarities between Satan and Obama were purely coincidental.
“If you’re gonna do what we do for a living, which is stick your neck out there,” Burnett explained to Oprah during their recent chat. “It’s a free country and you got to accept that.”
In addition to Burnett and Downey, the actor who portrayed Satan in The Bible also appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter. Diogo Morgado will likely discuss his reaction to the controversy when the episode airs Sunday evening (April 14) on OWN.
Many people quickly took to various social media sites to complain about the similarities between Satan and Obama last month. As soon as the complaining reached a fever pitch, the folks at The History Channel issued a statement on the matter.
The press release read:
“The series was produced with an international and diverse cast of respected actors. It’s unfortunate that anyone made this false connection. History’s ‘The Bible’ is meant to enlighten people on its rich stories and deep history.”
