Hillary Clinton Signs Book Deal, Potential Next Step In Run For President
Simon & Schuster announced last week that it will publish Hillary Clinton’s memoir about her time as Secretary of State, due for publication in June of next year. The book deal could result in a book tour positioning Clinton on firm ground to run for president in 2016.
“Hillary Clinton has redefined the meaning of ‘trailblazer’ in every phase of her career on the world stage, as First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State, and notably, as an author,” Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy said in a press release. “She is widely admired by her peers in the highest levels of government in both the United States and internationally, and has become a role model for millions.”
The book deal will give Hillary Clinton the chance to cover many foreign policy developments, thrusting her extensive experience into the public’s eye. As secretary of state, Clinton had to respond to the end of the Iraq war, a draw down in Afghanistan, a string of Arab Spring uprisings, the overthrows of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and Muammar Qaddafi in Libya, and the assassination of Obama Bin Laden.
“Hillary Clinton’s extraordinary public service has given her a unique perspective on recent history and the challenges we face,” Simon & Schuster Publishing Group President Jonathan Karp said. “This will be the ultimate book for people who are interested in world affairs and America’s place in the world today.”
Financial details surrounding the book deal have not been unveiled, but Simon & Schuster paid Hillary Clinton $8 million for her 2003 memoir Living History. The company has published all of Clinton’s previous books, including It Takes a Village in 1996, Dear Socks, Dear Buddy in 1998, and An Invitation to the White House in 2000.
During President Barack Obama’s first term in office, Hillary Clinton broke the record for number of countries visited as secretary of state. She visited 112 countries in total. The previous record was 96 countries, set by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright under President Bill Clinton.
If Hillary Clinton does decide to run for president again, her book will come out at just the right time to kick off her campaign. Clinton announced her candidacy for the 2008 presidential race in January of 2007. Hillary Clinton’s book deal could provide her with plenty of good press going into 2015, just in time to announce her intentions to run for president in 2016.
