‘Borderlands 2’: How Anthony Burch Wrote The Story [Video]

Borderlands 2 has an interesting story, even behind its story, and Anthony Burch made a video to explain it. Kind of.

Anthony Burch was lucky to get hired to write the story for Borderlands 2. He wrote a critically acclaimed script, but it wasn’t easy. He thought for sure Gearbox was going to fire him.

In an episode of Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’?, Ash re-enacts Anthony’s struggle, which includes a bit of the bending of genders.

The video begins with Ash sitting opposite Anthony, as he stares at his laptop, and she asks, “What’s wrong?”

Anthony responds, “Being interviewed.”

Ash perks up a little, “With a vampire?”

Anthony says, “We’re emailing and I can’t figure out how to answer the first f***ing question,” and Ash hisses for no reason we can decipher.

Ash asks, “What’s the question?”

Anthony says, looking up at Ash, “What was it like writing Borderlands 2?”

Ash replied, “What’s so hard about that? What was it like when you got the job?”

Anthony almost shrugs it off, “It was great, it was fantastic, but … it was complicated.”

Then we see Ash wearing a fake beard as Anthony goes into detail. Anthony starts to narrate as Ash acts out his story.

Anthony says, “When I found out I got the job, I was obviously happy.”

Ash starts pouring two bottles of what looks like Bacardi over the sides of her mouth to make it look like she’s drinking it as she yells something unintelligible and seems to start gargling.

Anthony says, “I did lots of research on the first game by looking at the Borderlands Wiki. But when I realized that whatever random bullsh** I thought of would one day be recorded in that same Wiki’s canon, I might have gotten a small God complex.”

Ash goes from staring at the screen to standing up with her arms out, “I can create universes with my motherf***ing mind!” She then laughs a bit.
