Cockroach Cam You Can Watch But Not While You’re Eating

A cockroach cam? Really? Folks, I’ve got a fantastic new appetite suppressant, and the price is right, because it’s absolutely free. I’ve just tried it, and it absolutely works. In fact, I’m thinking of giving up eating altogether.

I’m talking about the newest animal cam courtesy of New Orleans’ own Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. Now I’ve visited this place before, and it’s really something else. Should I admit that they have a kitchen called Bug Appétit which gives cooking demonstrations?

Should I admit that my buddy and I tried the chocolate-covered mealworms, or is that too much information? Yeah, tastes like chicken. Chocolate-coated chicken.

The insectarium is also kinda different because it’s in the US Customs House, a federal building, so you have to go through a security screening before you can look at the bugs. Now, that may not seem too unusual to you folks from the north, but those of us from the south and from Texas are reminded that it means we’ve got to leave our firearms locked in the gun rack of our Ford F-150. I’m just sayin’.

Anyway, for those of you who don’t have time to lock up your guns and come all the way to downtown New Orleans to look at some bugs, they’ve got the answer — cockroach cam. That’s right. In partnership with Animal Planet, the insectarium has now set up a live cam where you can watch the activities of live giant cockroaches — the kind that can grow up to two inches long and learn how to fly.

I’ve been saying for years that New Orleans needs its own animal cam. Those peregrine falcon cams around the country are inspirational. And who doesn’t love the annual nesting of the Iowa bald eagles or New York City’s own red-tailed hawks?

Since our Southern bald eagle breeds in the winter, we could be watching some cute eagle babies when the rest of the country is hip deep in sleet and snow.

However, when I asked for a New Orleans cam, a cockroach cam wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.

You can view the cockroach cam by clicking on this link, but be warned. I’m not responsible if you lose your lunch.
