Appearing on HuffPost Live , Jada Pinket Smith answered a direct question from Marc Lamont Hill about the rumor that she and Will Smith have an open relationship. Her answer was pretty ambiguous though.
If you watch the Jada interview, you might hear it different than if you read her response when Hill asked if it was true. Jada said, “I think, no. I think that people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another.”
She went on to explain what she told girlfriends when they asked about being with such a superstar who has all kinds of opportunities to cheat:
“I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him.”
The rumor started after a Will Smith interview with UK magazine Reveal in which Will Smith discussed not using the words “forsaking all others” when they were married in 1997:
“Our perspective is, you don’t avoid what’s natural and you’re going to be attracted to people.”
When Hill asked Jada if their understanding went both ways, Jada answered, “Absolutely.” She said you have to respect that you’re in a relationship but understand that you’re an individual as well.
If I was on a jury, I’m not sure I could reach a verdict based on Jada’s answer because we don’t know if Will Smith is the kind of man who can cheat and look at himself in the mirror and be okay with that decision.
