‘Girls’ Actor Christopher Abbott Quits Show
On the season finale of Girls, regular “girl” Marnie after spending a season of whining and trying to find herself, finally reconciles with estranged ex- boyfriend Charlie. It was a lovely reunion that had some people saying it was too good to be true. It turns out it was too good to be true, as it’s being reported that the actor who plays Charlie (Christopher Abbott) has decided to quit Girls.
Since his breakout role of playing Marnie’s needy boyfriend, Christopher Abbott has quietly enjoyed some success outside of Girls, scoring indie roles in various films., but currently the actor doesn’t have any projects lined up outside of the show.
Abbott’s exit from the HBO show wasn’t a smooth or amicable decision either. The report claims that Abbott chose to abruptly leave in the middle of production after having a dispute with Girls creator, writer, and star, Lena Dunham. Although the squabble between Dunham and Abbott hasn’t been confirmed by either reps, Abbott’s rep does speak out on his decision to leave the hit show.
Christopher Abbott’s representative released the following statement via an Email earlier today, confirming the news that he was indeed leaving the show:
“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”
Girls is currently in the middle of shooting their third season in New York. So far creator Lena Dunham hasn’t commented on the matter, but we’re guessing she wouldn’t want to, seeing as this doesn’t look like it was a clean break and may actually cause creative problems within the show.
As viewers we were left with the season finale that reunited Marnie and Charlie, and because of Abbott’s decision to abruptly leave the show, it’s not known whether or not that prominent line will ever be truly reconciled.
Are you upset that Christopher Abbott is no longer on Girls?
