Jennifer Garner Explains Ben Affleck’s Emotional Oscar Speech
When Ben Affleck won Best Film for Argo at the Academy Awards, the next day people were still talking about his very flustered, if not truly endearing speech upon accepting his award as a producer on the film.
During most Oscar speeches some recipients make sweet and short dedications to their spouses, and others forget their spouses entirely, which has become a curse for a few Best Actress winners. Luckily for Affleck, he did not forget that he was married to Jennifer Garner. In fact, he spent a chunk of his speech nervously rambling about his love for her.
His dedication to Jennifer Garner was as follows:
“I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It’s good. It is work, but the best kind of work and there’s no one I’d rather work with.”
Marriage is work? Who would have thought! The media ran with his rocky, albeit enthusiastic speech, with headlines that the two were headed towards divorce, and have been in an uneven marriage for years. However, now we have Jennifer Garner to set things straight, and she doesn’t exactly mince words.
Garner told The Telegraph about how she interpreted Ben’s Oscar speech, saying: “I had a friend call and say, ‘Are you OK?’ I know Ben, I knew he meant it as the hugest, warmest compliment in the world. I think he was saying, ‘Look, what we have is really real and I value it above all and I’m in it with you and I know you are in it with me.’ That’s the way I took it.”
Truly it’s the way anyone should have interpreted the speech, because it’s no secret that marriage is hard work at times. Still out of his win, it was all anyone could talk about. Garner continues, sympathizing with the scrutiny Affleck received over that part of his speech:
“Poor guy. It’s so horrible to put yourself out there. He didn’t have to worry about it from my point of view.”
