‘Pacific Rim’: Guillermo Del Toro Shows Off Trailer At WonderCon
Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro showed off the trailer for his new film at a WonderCon panel.
Guillermo del Toro made his appearance at Anaheim Convention Center to show off the new science fiction action film Pacific Rim‘s trailer. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day … and you know Guillermo del Toro has to cast Ron Perlman. It happened in Alien: Resurrection, Blade II, and Hellboy, and he’s a creature of habit.
Pacific Rim takes place in the not-too-distant future, where giant monsters named the Kaiju have invaded Earth. In an effort to fight these monsters, the human race has banded together to create giant robot warriors known as Jaegers. One has to question whether or not the automatons were named after the beverage.
A trailer for Pacific Rim opened the panel, having been made specifically for WonderCon, and is not planned to screen anywhere else, other than CinemaCon. The trailer showed off Ron Perlman as a Kaiju organ dealer in sunglasses and a smoking jacket, who harvests the fallen aliens and sells the product for medicinal purposes.
Charlie Day shows up in the trailer as Dr. Newton Geiszler, sort of a nerdy and unassuming expert on the monsters. He starts it off saying, “If you want to stop them, you have to understand them.”
Charlie Hunnam’s character Raleigh Becket replies, “Or we could just blow them to pieces.”
One practical effect Guillermo del Toro threw in was a rig for a four-story-tall Jaeger which was designed to shake the actors in combat scenes. At the end of the day, it took its toll on everybody. He said, “That’s why guys never give bit. They’re crybabies. We’d go extinct as a species. They’d be like, ‘F*** that!'”
In the creation of the Jaegers and Kaijus for Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro notes that by the end, there are several different types of each one. During production, there was a running contest to see which ones could compete with the next model, and the winner went on to the next round.
The WonderCon Pacific Rim trailer concluded with the cover art for the film’s tie-in graphic novel, Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero.
