‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Tops Friday Box Office

The long-awaited sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation topped the box office on Friday.

Director Jon Chu’s action flick was already off to a strong start on Wednesday evening and Thursday. The film continued to post strong numbers on Friday. The follow-up managed to bring home around $15.5 million.

Should the film continue to bring moviegoers into theaters during the holiday weekend, analysts believe G.I. Joe: Retaliation could finish out with $50 million in ticket sales. The movie’s two-day total currently stands at $26 million.

If the film tops out at $50 million, this will put the sequel around $4 million behind Stephen Sommer’s 2009 offering G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The film installment of the franchise would go on to make approximately $302 million around the world.

Paramount pictures is hoping Retaliation will make a considerable dent in foreign markets as well. When all is said and done, the film’s four-day international total is expected to rest at $100 million.

While the G.I. Joe sequel has received the strongest reviews from critics, this hasn’t stopped fans from checking out the follow-up. The movie currently sports a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 29 percent. The film’s audience score is currently situated at 69 percent.

Landing in second place was the DreamWorks Animation comedy The Croods. The family flick is expected to remain popular with families over the Easter holiday. The movie landed in second place on Friday with $10.7 million in ticket sales.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation and The Host landed in third and fourth place at the box office, respectively. The latest offering from the prolific writer-director earned $9.4 million on opening day. The Host, Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer novel, brought in $5.2 million.
