‘Evil Dead 4’ Or ‘Army Of Darkness 2’? Bruce Campbell Talks Fourth ‘Ash’ Film

Evil Dead 4 or Army of Darkness 2? According to Bruce Campbell in a recent interview with Empire (posted Thursday), it really doesn’t matter. “The King” would return either way.

When last audiences saw Ash (Campbell), he was a lowly S-Mart employee blowing a Deadite to kingdom come in the original film’s theatrical ending.

But if Campbell had his way, the new appearance of the man with the chainsaw hand, would follow the events of the alternate ending to that previous effort.

(The ending fans didn’t get to see until Anchor Bay started releasing a new DVD edition of the film every month when the home video format was in its infancy.)

In that ending, Ash screws up the words a second time and instead of ending up in his own time, finds himself in a post-Apocalyptic London.

Campbell speculated that the alternate ending would give “great possibilities for an Omega Man movie, and who he [Ash] might be fighting against. … It would be a very interesting world.”

However, Campbell insisted that he wasn’t privy to the workings of writer-director Sam Raimi’s mind, adding that he was “fine either way.”

“I’m sure Sam will concoct some ridiculous story and an outrageous journey, so I don’t really care where it starts and ends,” Campbell said. “The fun thing is working again with Sam Raimi … That’s the only reason to do these incredibly difficult movies than work for a guy who you really like working with and who you respect.”

Campbell added that Raimi said he would work on the story over the summer with brother Ivan Raimi. “He could be smoking cigars at a lakeside cabin for all I know, or he might actually be working, who knows?”

Evil Dead fans have had a lot to be grateful for with the April release of a remake and an announcement earlier this month regarding the Army of Darkness/Evil Dead sequel.

Director Fede Alvarez worked closely with Raimi and Campbell on a completely original take for the series with next month’s effort,Yahoo! noted.

Should the remake perform well, a sequel to the remake could even run concurrently with Army of Darkness 2.

And as far as we know, that would be the first time in the history of cinema, an original series and its remake would have sequels going at the same time.
