Bollywood Star Sanjay Dutt Will Return To Prison

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt will return to prison to finish his sentence for a 1993 weapons conviction.

Dutt said he purchased the illegal firearms in order to protect his family. The Bollywood star didn’t know that the men who sold him the weapons were terrorists who would later execute a series of bombings in Mumbai. The attacks claimed the lives of 257 people.

The actor has been out on bail since 2007 as he awaited the results of his appeal. However, the Supreme Court ultimately decided that Dutt will return to prison to carry out the remainder of his sentence.

“I respect the Supreme Court’s verdict. I have not applied for any pardon,” said during a news conference outside of his home in Mumbai. “There are many other people who deserve pardon.”

The Bollywood star addressed his return to prison roughly a week after the verdict was handed down. Dutt said that he intends to finish up as many films as possible in the next four weeks. The actor is reportedly involved with several productions that have yet to be completed.

Sanjay Dutt broke down several times as he read his statement to those in attendance. He said that his family and friends are devastated by the news.

“Right now I am a shattered man. My family is shattered,” he explained.

The Bollywood star was convicted of possessing illegal firearms back in 2006. He spent roughly 18 months in prison before he was released pending the results of the appeal.

Although Dutt has previously tried his hand at politics, he is best known for his roles in several Bollywood movies. Many consider him to be one of the most bankable stars in India’s film industry. Analysts believe his conviction could have a negative effect on the business.

Since the actor has already served time behind bars, he will only spend three-and-a-half years in prison on the weapons charges.
