The hit play The Book of Mormon has broken another record.
The play, from South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, recently broke the single day record for ticket sales in London theater history.
According to the Seattle Times , The Book of Mormon sold 2,107,972 million pounds (about $3.2 million) in tickets between 10 a.m. and midnight on Friday. The total is the highest in London history and beats The Book Of Mormon’s Broadway performance. The play sold $1.5 million when it opened on Broadway.
Producer Scott Rudin said : “London can be tough. American musicals tend to get knocked in the teeth in London, by and large. It’s a tougher place.”
The Book Of Mormon also easily bested the play Wicked which has had a great run in London. Wicked, a play that brings audiences into the world of Oz, sold just over 1 million pounds of tickets when it opened. Wicked has enjoyed a long run in London and Rudin expects The Book Of Mormon to do the same.
The play is currently booked at the Prince of Wales Theatre until January but Rudin predicts that the show may be there for much longer.
The Book Of Mormon has been a huge success since it was released. It racked up nine Tony Awards and a Grammy in 2011 . Demand for tickets grew so high that year that ticket prices soared close to $500 (also a record). It broke the ticket sales record at the Bank Of America Theater in Chicago and The Book Of Mormon tour continues to set records around the country.
The play has been so successful that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are planing a movie version of the play in the near future.
Stone said: “We want to do it some day. The great thing is, a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey’s a director and Scott’s a great producer. We’ve all made movies. So it’s kind of cool, it can stay in the same family.”
