New ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Photos Show Gwen Meeting Mary Jane
New photos from the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 show Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson meeting for the very first time.
Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley are currently in New York City filming the sequel to Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which rebooted the lucrative superhero franchise. Director Marc Webb is back behind the camera with all of the old gang and several newcomers to the cast.
On Monday, Stone and Woodley started filming their first scenes together.
A bit of comic book background for the uninitiated: Gwen Stacy is considered Peter Parker’s first love in the funnies, and Mary Jane Watson was introduced merely as a rival for his affection. Stacy was shockingly killed by The Green Goblin (Harry Osborn will be played by Chris Cooper in the new films), and Parker’s relationship with Mary Jane progressed from close friends into marriage.
Woodley plays Mary Jane, and was meant to only cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Recent set photos of Woodley in character show her working as a waitress in a diner, riding a motorcycle and meeting Peter Parker, and now, meeting Gwen Stacy. Seems like a bit more than a simple cameo to me, so maybe there will be a definite love triangle developing between the characters in the sequel.
In any case, the more I hear about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the easier it is to get excited about it. Emma Stone recently talked about the film, saying that it will “bridge the distance” between Gwen and Peter left from the events of the first film, and said that the script is “very, very good.”
“I’m in it, Andrew is in it, they just cast Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn who is such a great actor. And Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane, who’s also wonderful. So there’s all that and the script is very, very good,” she said.
“I’m very much looking forward to it. I’m very happy that our first one was received so well, it’ll be cool in the next one to see how Gwen and Peter bridge that distance that was between us at the end of it. I think the way it all unfolds is pretty neat. And I hope they continue letting Gwen be heroic, I think they might!”
