Michelle Obama Oscars: First Lady Makes Surprise Appearance At Academy Awards To Present Best Picture

Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Oscars, joining Jack Nicholson to present the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The First Lady appeared via satellite from the White House, coming as a surprise to the audience in Hollywood and watching from home.

“I am so honored to help introduce this year’s nominees for best picture and help celebrate the movies that lift our spirits, broaden our minds and transport us to places we have never imagined,” Michelle Obama said.

She added, “[These films] taught us that love can beat all odds. They reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage within ourselves.”

Obama was given the honor of opening the winning envelope and revealing that Argo won Best Picture.

Michelle Obama’s appearance wasn’t the only surprising thing about the end of the Academy Awards, The Huffington Post noted. While Argo was considered one of the frontrunners to win Best Picture, it became the first movie to win the top honor without a corresponding nomination for its director.

Despite the snub, Ben Affleck appeared jubilant on stage as he thanked those involved on the film, which tells the story of Americans trapped in Iran after the 1979 revolution and the CIA’s plan to free them using a fake science fiction movie.

“It doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life, all that matters is how you get back up,” Affleck said in an emotional acceptance speech.
